On and Off Weekend for the Rivermen

First of all I would like to apologize for taking so long to get this blog post out.  As you can imagine after a big opening weekend I needed to relax and let this weekends events sink in.

It all started Friday night for a trip out to South Surrey for the opening night of the inaugural season for the Langley Rivermen as they faced the Surrey Eagles in the first of a home and home.  It didn't seem that Langley had any signs of early season jitters as they came flying out of the gates.  Although for their efforts they finished the first period scoreless with their rivals.  Mike Tebbutt would change that in the second period as he tallied the Rivermen's first ever goal in franchise history.  Mario Puskarich would net the next goal and the Rivermen would lead the game by a score of 2-0 until Michael Stenerson would get the first goal of the 2011/12 season for the Eagles and head to the dressing room with a score of 2-1.  In the third the Rivermen showed great poise after Surrey turned on the jets and tried to pot the equalizer.  After many attempts Stenerson scored his second of the night and sent this game to thrilling overtime.  And in the second overtime while 3 on 3, Mario Puskarich would get the winner with his second of the night and ultimately get the Rivermen their first win in franchise history.  This game definitely had a playoff type atmosphere.  Edge of your seat excitement as both teams gave it their all.

On Saturday was a different story.  Once again for the 5th straight year the teams traded victories in each others buildings.  Surrey would jump out to a quick 2-0 lead and never look back as the Rivermen were outmatched by the Eagles in this night.  With all due respect for the Rivermen who are still getting to know each others playing abitlity, Langley just took too many penalties which always come back to bite you in the end.  Look for the Rivermen to work very hard this coming weekend to rectify the penalty situations.  Langley tried to claw their way back into the game but ended up coming up short in the end as they were defeated by a score of 5-2.

On Sunday we were at it once again in the community as we made a appearance at BC Rivers Day @ Williams park in Langley.  The weather was not the greatest but that didn't stop some of our fans from making a trip out to say hi to us at the Rivermen tent.

This weekend will be a tough contest for the Langley Rivermen as they play 3 games in 3 nights away from the Langley Events Centre.  First, another date with the Surrey Eagles on Friday night and then a trip out to Powell River for 2 straight against the ever powerful Kings @ Hap Parker Arena on Saturday and Sunday.

As for now your up to date.  See you at the rink.
